SEO Tip Number 2 (Alt Attribute)

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Images on any site are great but search engines can’t read them though they are get indexed. However, I am not suggesting that you avoid using images on your site. Instead, I would recommend not to use too much of it especially if your site purpose is to rank better for your keywords as search engines (SE) bots can read plain text better than images.

We cannot ignore the fact that to some, images are premium to implement on their sites especially if you sell products online like mobile phones, computers, gadgets, etc. That’s fine but make sure you don’t stuff your page with images as it becomes inaccessible. The SE bots can’t access your site if you do it. Now if you place two to three images on your sites, you’ll be OK if you take advantage of the alt tags for all your images. Before we go deeper, what exactly does an alt attribute provide?

 The alt attribute specifies an alternate text for user agents that cannot display images, forms and applets. Generally, bot concentrates on the information provided in the alt attribute. If you use images on your site, make sure your alt tags are appropriate. Use your keywords and you can be descriptive when doing it. Do not stuff your alt tags with keywords as search engines may ban your sites for spamming your site with keywords.

Here are some examples of proper coding for alt attribute:

HTML Example:
<img src=”seo.gif” width=”90″ height=”60″ alt=”SEO”>

As I mentioned above, you can use specific keyword for it or you can put a short description with your keyword on it.

I hope this helps for those who are just learning SEO.

It’s your turn, share your ideas if you are a PRO or if you are a beginner, ask questions.
